Moving Forward with Riverfront

Today the City of Fort Wayne will take an important step in the continued development of our rivers. Many people in the community are vertree canopyy excited about riverfront development – including myself. However, it’s that very excitement that can lead to making imprudent decisions based on miscommunication and failure to collaborate. I want to thank council for making the decision to delay its vote on the Riverworks contract to allow Al Moll and the Parks Department to sit down with David Bennett and the Community Foundation to begin formalizing the process of facilitating private foundation funding into this public portion of the riverfront development process. Such funds are vital because other forms of private investment are not contemplated in this phase.

As members of the Fort Wayne Common Council we are stewards of taxpayer funds. That duty requires that we do everything in our power to ensure that this process moves forward responsibly to ensure that we achieve something our community supports. I am very encouraged by the Memorandum of Understanding between the Board of Park Commissioners and the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. I firmly believe that this relationship will provide a stronger foundation to help facilitate significant private, charitable funds into the next phase of riverfront development, and I look forward to seeing what the City, the parks, Riverworks and its team has in store for us moving forward.
