Allen County Republican Chairman Steve Shine was so pleased with his party’s three nominees for at-large City Council seats that he told supporters Tuesday the GOP may even expand its six-member majority on the nine-seat body.

If so, however, it will happen without the help of 1st District incumbent Tom Smith, who in the major surprise of the evening was handily defeated after 15 years in office by Paul Ensley.

Unlike district representatives, council’s three-at large members represent the entire city. Leading the Republican ticket were incumbent John Crawford with 6,457 votes, Michael Barranda with 6,074 and Tom Freistroffer with 4,983. Also on the ballot were Eric Tippmann, 3,710 votes; Allen County Councilman Robert Armstrong, 3,532 votes; Teresa Sutton, 3,291 votes, and Lee Bradley, 1,153 votes. Incumbent Marty Bender is not seeking re-election.
